Prof. Frederik Buylaert

Frederik Buylaert is a full professor in social history at Ghent University. He studied Medieval and Early Modern History at Ghent University, Leiden University and Columbia University and obtained his Ph.D. from Ghent University (2008). After a postdoctoral career with the Research Foundation Flanders (2009-2011), he was lecturer at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (2011-2016), including research stays at Columbia University and the University of California - Berkeley. In 2016-2022 he was the PI of the ERC Starting Grant Project "STATE - Lordship and the Rise of the State in Western Europe, 1300-1600" and since 2021 he is the PI-Spokesperson of the GOA-Project "Lordship and Agrarian Capitalism in the Low Countries (c. 1350-1650). He has a side interest in the history of urban elites and Early Netherlandish Painting.
