Human history is fundamentally a history of movement. This part of the LOCO project explores human mobility through the study of human remains from the Low Countries, spanning from the Neolithic to the Late Middle Ages.

This part of the project seeks to integrate and question the movement of materials through the use of chemical analysis (elemental and isotopic), without neglecting the “idea” aspect linked to shared object forms.

This part of the project examines how ideas moved into, out of, and within the Low
Countries. These ideas include practical knowledge, beliefs, norms, and ways of
organising society. LOCO studies how such ideas travelled, changed, and took root
in new places.

Located within the North Sea area, and through its position at the crossroads of major rivers and waterways in Europe as well as the absence of mountains and hard to cross rivers, the Low Countries provide a unique case study to understand changes in the mobility of people, materials, and ideas.
