Crossroads

Crossroads have long stood at the core of human experience. They may represent decisive moments in an individual’s life, times of transition, or physical places where encounters with people, objects, and ideas may be deeply impactful.

This project explores how the geographical position of the Low Countries, with their accessible waterways, limited natural barriers, and later-developed road networks, functioned as a crossroads for the mobility of people, materials, and ideas from the Neolithic to the Early Medieval period.

Such crossroads took various forms: from tangible sites such as marketplaces and centralized places of worship, including abbeys, as well as more ephemeral moments of encounter linked to key life events, such as death, partnership, and community gatherings, to more enduring patterns of individual and population movement.

We approach the concept of crossroads both spatially and temporally, examining it across multiple scales of analysis, geographic settings, and chronological frameworks, while taking into account social and material dimensions. This theme is further developed through the three main research axes: people, materials, and ideas.
